DAVIS, Calif. (AP) — The University of California-Davis is going solar.
The Sacramento Bee reported Thursday that UC-Davis and San Jose-based SunPower Corp. have announced plans to build a solar power plant intended to meet 14 percent of the university’s electricity needs.
The project, to be completed in 2015, is being touted as one of the largest solar power plants to offset the electricity demand of a U.S. university or college campus.
It will be built on a 70-acre site south of Interstate 80 and will be designed, constructed, owned and operated by SunPower.
The 16-megawatt plant is designed to generate 33 million kilowatt-hours of electricity annually. Officials say it could reduce the campus carbon footprint by about 9 percent, and produce substantial energy cost savings.
