The Oregon State University Malheur Experiment Station Field Day will be held this summer for the first time since 2019.

It is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. July 12 at the station, 595 Onion Ave., Ontario. The free event includes a hosted lunch.

“We are excited to welcome folks back to the field day,” said Stuart Reitz, center director. It was canceled in recent years due to COVID-19 restrictions.

Three major variety trials — in onions, potatoes and wheat — will be showcased along with other work, he said.

Joel Felix, a weed scientist at the station, is slated to show several of his weed-management projects.

“If people ever need to understand the importance of weed control for farmers, they just need to look at the untreated check plots in Joel’s trials,” Reitz said.

Insect-management trials in onions, potatoes and hemp will be shown, and station researchers will explain their goals in “managing insect pests as effectively and economically as possible while minimizing the development of insecticide resistance,” he said.

Udayakumar Sekaran, the station’s newest faculty member, is conducting research on fertility and irrigation management. One trial he will show is on irrigation management in onions, Reitz said.

Field day attendees will “have the opportunity to learn more about ag in the Treasure Valley and what the experiment station is here to do,” Reitz said.
