A Haines man died after jumpstarting a hay swather on the morning of July 7 in Baker Valley, according to the Baker County Sheriff’s Office.

Robert Paul Marlow, 66, died at the scene, at the intersection of Pole Line Road and Old Wingville Road.

Baker County Dispatch received a 911 call at 10:21 a.m., said Ashley McClay, public information officer for the sheriff’s office.

Deputy Kyle Ebeling responded to the call.

The investigation determined that Marlow was hit by one of the swather’s tires after he jumpstarted the machine.

The property owner found Marlow, and used a pickup truck to block the swather, which was still running. The property owner then turned off the swather.

Haines, Baker Rural and Keating fire protection districts, along with Pioneer Ambulance, responded to the scene.
