Compared to last week, steers and heifers sold unevenly steady, 2.00 lower to 2.00 higher on lighter trading this week. Demand was good with July 4th coming as one of our big grilling holidays. Slaughter Cows and Bulls are in high demand due to the availability of lean product.

The August feeder cattle contract closed at 259.025, 0.65 higher than last Fridays close, the September closed at 259.65, 0.25 lower than the previous week. Last Tuesday NASS released the Cold Storage report, total Red meat in freezers were down 3% from the previous month and down 5% from last year. Total pounds of beef in freezers were down 3% from the previous month and down slightly from last year.

Live sales of negotiated cash fed cattle trade in Texas sold steady to 1.00 higher at 190.00.

Live sales in Kansas sold unevenly steady at 190.00. In Nebraska, live sales sold steady to 1.00 higher at 198.00 with a few up to 200.00, while the dressed sales sold steady to 2.00 lower at 310.00, with a few up to 317.00. Choice boxed beef closed the week 3.93 higher at 326.32 while Select as 1.39 higher at 304.50 for the same period.

Weekly Cattle Slaughter under federal inspection estimated at 609K, 11K less than last week and 42K less than a year ago.

Year to Date Cattle Slaughter is currently 729K less than a year ago. Auction volume this week included 52% weighing over 600 lbs and 42% heifers.
