University of Idaho crop researchers plan to showcase field trials from 8 to 11:30 a.m. Aug. 8 at the Parma Research and Extension Center, 29603 U of I Lane, Parma. Registration for the field day, and breakfast, are scheduled to start at 7:15 a.m. Demonstrations on varieties, plant disease management, insect pests and nematology are planned during the free event, according to UI.

What, how and when to spray to control Cercospora leaf spot, a fungal disease that can damage sugar beets, is the focus of several acres of trials, James Woodhall, Parma-based UI plant pathologist and extension specialist, told Capital Press. Other trials focus on the impact of variety on potato early die, insect control and pythium management in dry beans, and the impact of cover crops on hops. Pythium can cause seed decay and root damage in dry beans.

Trials pertaining to plant growth regulators in potatoes to modify tuber size, pink root control in onions, and bacterial blight in carrots also will be featured.

Idaho and Oregon pesticide credits are expected to be available, according to UI.
