The Spokane Ag Show has announced a new scholarship program for Inland Northwest youth.

Two $4,000 individual scholarships are available. There is also one $2,000 FFA/4-H club award. The deadline for applications is Dec. 15.

The program is for active Inland Northwest agricultural farm youths in Idaho, Oregon and Washington. High school seniors who plan to study agriculture, including trade education, and can still be claimed as legal dependents are eligible.

Scholarships will be awarded to students attending accredited schools in any state. Scholarships will be paid directly to the educational institution.

“Especially now with so many pressures on ag families, this is just another way we can try to help support them in some way,” said Kara Rowe, president of the Spokane Ag Show and Pacific Northwest Farm Forum. “It’s getting more expensive to go to college and trade schools, and this is a great value to those folks whose kiddos are ready to leave the nest.”

The scholarship is open to students considering a four-year degree, trade school or community college, Rowe said.

The Spokane Ag Show Scholarship Committee will review applications and select applicable recipients. High school seniors are required to submit a completed application and requested information to be considered for the scholarship.

Scholarships will be awarded based on:

• Official transcript and grades: 25%.

• Essay: 30%.

• Personal profile: 30%.

• Video: 10%.

• Two letters of recommendation: 5%.

Deadline to submit is Dec. 15. Recipients will formally be announced during the Spokane Ag Show FFA program Feb. 8.

“My main message is: Apply,” Rowe said. “We just want to get as many applications in as we can. I can’t encourage families enough to apply. Hopefully it can benefit you no matter which path you choose to go down.”
