Hay prices are dollars per ton or dollars per bale when sold to retail outlets. Basis is current delivery FOB barn or stack, or delivered customer as indicated. Grade guidelines used in this report have the following relationship to Relative Feed Value (RFV), Acid Detergent Fiber (ADF), TDN (Total Digestible Nutrients), or Crude Protein (CP) test numbers:

Compared to March 22: All grades of Alfalfa and Timothy steady in a light
test. Trade remains slow. Demand excellent as remaining supplies are in firm hands.
Most growers are foregoing spraying on new crop this year as if they spray now it
will delay harvest at least 2 weeks more than normal. Not spraying will affect 1st
cutting quality negatively. Retail/Feed store steady. All prices are dollars per
ton and FOB the farm or ranch unless otherwise stated.

California Hay Report

Compared to March 22: All classes traded steady with moderate demand.
According to NASS Crop Progress report March 26, 2019, topsoil moisture 90%
adequate and 10% surplus. Subsoil moisture 30% adequate and 70% surplus. Winter
wheat condition 5% fair, 20% good, and 75% excellent. Pasture and range
condition 10% poor, 20% fair, 40% good, and 30% excellent. All estimates are for
the week ending March 24, 2019. Throughout the month, California experienced
temperatures slightly below average. Rainfall throughout most of the State was
also slightly below average. Pastures started to green up, but livestock
remained on supplemental feed. Peaches and prunes have started to bloom.
Asparagus harvest was halted because of rain. Processed tomato transplanting has
begun. Hay is reported FOB the stack or barn unless otherwise noted. Regions
are defined at bottom of report.
