Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife Director Kelly Susewind approved Tuesday removing one wolf from the Couse pack in southeast Washington.

The pack has been attacking cattle in Asotin County. The pack has killed a calf, injured two calves and a cow and probably injured another cow, according to the department.

Fish and Wildlife staff concluded the attacks will continue despite non-lethal measures to protect the cattle.

Fish and Wildlife confirmed the first predation June 27. A second attack was confirmed July 6 and two more were confirmed July 8.

On that day, an adult male wolf was lawfully killed chasing livestock. The department held off on lethal control.

Fish and Wildlife confirmed another attack on a calf Sept. 19, leading to Susewind’s order to remove one wolf in hopes of deterring more predations.

The department killed two wolves in the Onion Creek pack Sept. 19 in response to attacks on cattle in Stevens and Pend Oreille counties in northeast Washington.
