Bird flu was confirmed Tuesday at a chicken farm in Franklin County, Wash., the latest detection in a prolonged outbreak that has now claimed more than 100 million birds nationwide.

The farm will be quarantined and the chickens euthanized, according to the Washington State Department of Agriculture. The USDA reported the outbreak affected 839,700 birds.

The farm reported an unusual number of deaths Oct. 11. Other birds were lethargic, according to WSDA. The flock tested positive for bird flu in preliminary tests. The National Veterinary Services Laboratories confirmed the results late Tuesday.

Wild birds spread highly pathogenic avian influenza. The U.S. outbreak started 32 months ago and has claimed 103.4 million birds in 48 states. The 2014-15 outbreak lasted 15 months and claimed 50.5 million birds.

The Franklin County chicken farm was the first commercial poultry operation in Washington to be struck by bird flu this year. Within the past 30 days, commercial flocks also have been hit in California, Florida and Utah.

Two backyard flocks in Idaho were infected in the past 30 days, according to USDA. Some 800 birds were euthanized in the two flocks combined.

USDA compensates farmers for destroyed poultry and eggs. To encourage prompt reporting of infected flocks, USDA does not pay for birds that die from avian influenza.

USDA has paid out more than $1 billion during the current outbreak, according to congressional sources.
