The Idaho State Department of Agriculture will take applications for Specialty Crop Block Grants through March 10.

ISDA expects to receive an allocation of more than $2 million from USDA, according to the state agency, which last year awarded grants that averaged $113,500 each to 17 projects.

Eligible projects must enhance the competitiveness of Idaho-grown specialty crops in domestic or foreign markets, and must benefit more than one organization, institution or individual.

Specialty crops include fruits, vegetables, tree nuts, dried fruits, horticulture, and nursery crops including floriculture and honey.

Idaho projects funded last year benefited apples, beans, cherries, hops, mint, potatoes and seed potatoes, wine, onions and horticulture, according to ISDA. Grant-supported activities included domestic and international market expansion and trade facilitation, pest and disease control, crop management and education.
