President Trump lifted 25% tariffs on Mexico until at least April 2, saying on social media he and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum are working together on stopping the cross-border flow of illegal immigrants and fentanyl.
Trump posted March 6 on Truth Social that he agreed to suspend the tariffs after speaking to Sheinbaum. “I did this as an accommodation, and out of respect for President Sheinbaum,” Trump wrote.
“Our relationship has been a very good one, and we are working hard together, on the Border, both in terms of stopping illegal Aliens from entering the United States, and likewise, stopping Fentanyl,” the post read.
Trump imposed the tariff March 4, along with a 25% tariff on Canadian products and an additional 10% tariff on Chinese goods. Trump didn’t mention the tariffs on Canada and China. The lifting of tariffs on Mexico will be on goods covered by the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement, according to Trump.
In a post on X, Sheinbaum thanked Trump and said she and Trump agreed that their collaboration has yielded unprecedented results on border issues. “We will continue working together, particularly on issues of migration and security, which will include reducing the illegal crossing of fentanyl into the United States, as well as weapons into Mexico,” she said.
Sheinbaum had said Mexico would respond to Trump’s tariffs March 10. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau responded immediately with 25% tariffs on $30 billion worth of U.S. goods and said there would be a second round of tariffs on $125 billion worth of goods in 21 days if Trump didn’t lift his tariffs.
Less than hour before posting he was pausing tariffs on Mexico, Trump took a swipe at Trudeau. “Believe it or not, despite the terrible job he’s done for Canada, I think that Justin Trudeau is using the Tariff problem, which he has largely caused, in order to run again for Prime Minister. So much fun to watch!” Trump posted.
Trudeau announced in January he will step down as prime minister after a new leader is elected.
Trump has said he will announce reciprocal tariffs on other countries April 2.
