The Idaho Water Resource Board at its bimonthly meeting July 25-26 in Soda Springs approved 10 flood management grants that totaled more than $702,000.

The legislature piloted the program in 2017 during an extraordinarily heavy winter and later made it permanent, contributing $1 million a year. Amounts not awarded in a given grant cycle are carried over to future cycles.

Projects address flood prevention and risk reduction, and repair and improvement of stream channels. The projects can help to prevent or reduce flood damage in rivers and streams, according to the state Department of Water Resources.

The matching grants are prioritized and awarded on a competitive basis. No more than half the budget can be spent in one district.

Eligible entities include flood control, drainage and irrigation districts; canal companies; municipalities; counties; and other public entities. Grants have a $200,000 limit, and a 50% matching requirement using non-state dollars. Projects with higher match percentages receive additional points.
