The two turkeys pardoned by President Joe Biden for Thanksgiving now have names: Peach and Blossom.

The turkeys were named and pardoned in a ceremony at the White House Nov. 25 in Washington, D.C.

They were presented by John Zimmerman, a Minnesota turkey farmer and chairman of the National Turkey Federation, and his son, Grant.

“We appreciate President Biden for warmly welcoming the National Turkey Federation and my family, friends and colleagues from the Minnesota Turkey Growers Association to the White House earlier today,” Zimmerman said in a press release. “While this is a busy season for our industry, it’s an honor to share the story of the hardworking turkey farmers, like ours, and processors who provide food not only for the holidays but every day of the year. Their dedication feeds families across the globe, and we couldn’t be more thankful for their commitment to nourishing America and around the world.”

Biden’s remarks

In his remarks, Biden said Peach and Blossom were named for the Delaware state flower, the peach blossom. Biden represented Delaware in the Senate from 1973 to 2009.

Peach weighs 41 pounds and Blossom weighs 40 pounds.

The White House tradition began when turkey was presented to President Harry S. Truman. Pardoning the turkeys began under President George H.W. Bush.

“In the last four years, I’ve had the honor to continue that tradition by pardoning Peanut Butter and Jelly, Chocolate and Chip, Liberty and Bell,” Biden said. “And today, Peach and Blossom will join the free birds of the United States of America.”

Peach and Blossom will live out the rest of their days as “turkey ambassadors” at Farmamerica, an agricultural interpretive center in Waseca, Minn.

The event marks the official start of the holiday season in Washington, D.C., Biden said.

“It’s also my last time to speak here as your president during this season and give thanks and gratitude,” Biden said. “So, let me say to you: It’s been the honor of my life. I’m forever grateful. … May we use this moment to take time from our busy lives and focus on what matters most: our families, our friends and our neighbors.”
