BAKER CITY, Ore. — Wolves from the Lookout Mountain area killed a six-week-old calf in the Daly Creek area south of Richland, according to the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife.

An ODFW biologist investigated the case on April 27.

The calf was found on public land.

It was the first confirmed wolf attack on livestock in Baker County since Jan. 30, according to ODFW.

Oregon’s wolf population increases slightly to at least 178

A lone male wolf that had been returning regularly to the east side of Baker Valley, between Highways 86 and 203, feeding on unburied cattle carcasses, apparently has vacated the area, said Brian Ratliff, district wildlife biologist at ODFW’s Baker City office.

Ratliff said he was in a helicopter on April 13 when he saw the wolf in the valley. The pilot flew low to try to haze the wolf, and based on data from the GPS tracking collar on the animal, it hasn’t been back in the valley since, Ratliff said.

The wolf crossed Interstate 84 and was in the Phillips Reservoir area on April 24, Ratliff said.
