A suspect has been arrested on charges connected to a July forest fire that burned more than 90 acres south of Detroit Reservoir in Oregon.

Jason Everett Patterson, 49, of Salem, Ore., was arrested on charges of reckless burning, reckless endangering and second-degree criminal mischief.

He turned himself in to deputies at the Linn County Jail in Albany, Ore., on Oct. 11.

The Slate Fire on U.S. Forest Service land did not destroy any homes or structures, but the agency had more than $2 million worth of expenses related to suppression of the blaze, according to a Linn County Sheriff’s Office news release.

LCSO Mountain Patrol deputies and detectives investigated the cause of the fire and were assisted by the USFS.

Patterson was found near the fire when the blaze started and was transported to a hospital to be treated for burns.

As the investigation continued, it was revealed that Patterson started the blaze when he lit multiple fires, which he stated were to signal for help, the news release stated.

The area was under USFS fire restriction orders, which were in place due to high fire danger at the time.

Patterson quickly lost control of his signal fires, which set the surrounding forest ablaze.
